Patient pathways
Patient self-referral
The Pectus Clinic accepts self-referrals for all pectus and chest wall conditions. You do not need a letter from your GP to book an initial consultation. Most patients book directly after seeing the clinic website or being recommended by another patient or clinician.
How it works

Send a message via the enquiry form, by email to enquiries@pectusclinic.com. Include the patient's age and a brief description of the concern.
The clinic responds — within 1–2 working days
The clinic will typically ask for one or two photographs of the chest wall. These are reviewed personally by Mr Hunt, who provides initial advice or further information. This brief triage helps decide whether a full consultation is likely to be useful and which appointment type is most appropriate.
Invitation to register with Carebit and arrange a consultation
If a consultation is appropriate, the clinic will send a Carebit registration link — the clinic's secure patient portal used for invoicing, documents and appointment management. Once registered, an appointment can be arranged (virtual or in person).

GP or specialist referral
Referrals are welcome from GPs, paediatricians, physiotherapists, and other specialists. A referral letter is helpful but not required — patients can book directly and bring the letter to their appointment.

Send the letter to the clinic
Email to enquiries@pectusclinic.com, or post to the clinic address. The clinic will respond within 1–2 working days to confirm receipt and advise on next steps.
Register with Carebit and book a consultation
The clinic will send a registration link for Carebit — the clinic's secure patient portal. Once registered, patients can arrange a consultation (virtual or in person) and manage their booking online.
Attend consultation
A full clinical assessment, review of any imaging, and detailed discussion of the treatment pathway. Findings and recommendations are communicated back to the referring clinician with the patient's consent.

For referring clinicians
If you would rather not write a letter, you can refer a patient online in a couple of minutes. The referral arrives directly in our clinical system rather than as an email, so nothing is lost in an inbox, and you will receive Mr Hunt's assessment in the usual way.
If you would like to discuss a case before referring, Mr Hunt is available for a brief clinical conversation — contact the clinic to arrange. Urgent or complex cases, including revision surgery and failed prior treatment, can often be accommodated at short notice.

This is a private specialist clinic. For self-funding patients, a GP referral letter assists with clinical continuity but does not change the booking process. NHS patients should be referred via the NHS e-Referral Service (eRS) — see the NHS section below.

Private medical insurance
Mr Hunt is recognised by most major UK private medical insurers and many international health insurance providers. Pre-authorisation from your insurer is required before your consultation.
Mr Hunt holds fee-assured status with many major UK private medical insurers, meaning his consultation and professional fees are accepted at the insurer's standard rate. This does not guarantee that your own policy will cover the specific procedure, investigations or treatment required, as cover varies considerably between providers. You remain responsible for any excess on your policy, and we strongly advise confirming authorisation for both your consultation and your specific treatment pathway before attending.

Request pre-authorisation to see Mr Ian Hunt, Consultant Thoracic and Chest Wall Surgeon — GMC number 4318675 (Cardiothoracic). Some insurers require a GP referral letter before authorising a specialist consultation.
Obtain your authorisation number
Your insurer will provide a pre-authorisation or claim reference number. You must have this before attending — without it, the consultation will be charged as self-funding.
Book your appointment
Contact the clinic with your authorisation number. Bring your membership card and policy details on the day.

NHS patient pathway
NHS assessment and treatment are subject to NHS eligibility criteria, clinical prioritisation and appropriate referral pathways. A private consultation does not allow patients to bypass NHS waiting lists or NHS eligibility criteria.
NHS appointments are arranged through NHS channels via GP referral — not through the private clinic. Enquiries about the NHS referral route are always welcome and the clinic can help direct you to the appropriate pathway.

Having a private consultation at the Pectus Clinic does not affect your right to NHS care. You remain fully eligible for NHS treatment regardless of whether you have been seen privately. An early private consultation can be useful to obtain specialist assessment quickly, discuss your options, and plan ahead — but it does not allow you to bypass NHS waiting times or queue-jump. NHS appointments are allocated on the basis of clinical need, as with all other patients.

International patients
The Pectus Clinic welcomes patients from outside the UK. Initial assessment and triage can begin remotely before planning any travel to London — many patients from Europe, the Middle East, North America and elsewhere attend for complex or revision surgery, or for specialist non-surgical management not available in their home country.

Send a brief description and photographs of the chest wall to enquiries@pectusclinic.com. Mr Hunt reviews all triage enquiries personally and will advise on suitability, likely pathway, and any investigations that would be helpful to arrange locally before travelling.
Virtual consultation
A video consultation is arranged to discuss the clinical picture in detail, review any imaging, and agree a treatment plan before travel is arranged. Virtual consultations are available at the standard consultation fee of £295.
In-person consultation in London
Once the pathway is agreed, an in-person appointment is arranged at the most appropriate clinic location. A Carebit registration link will be sent to set up your patient record for invoicing and document management. The clinic can advise on timing and what to arrange before travelling.
Follow-up reviews during the bracing programme can be conducted by video call, reducing the number of trips to London required. In-person visits are needed at key milestones — typically fitting, mid-programme review, and completion.
The clinic can advise on what imaging or investigations to arrange locally before travelling — CT, X-ray or 3D chest wall reconstruction where relevant. This reduces the number of visits required and ensures the in-person consultation is as productive as possible.
Carebit — our patient portal
Carebit is the secure online portal used by the Pectus Clinic to manage patient records, invoicing, documents and communication. Once you are invited to register, you will use Carebit to manage your care and stay in contact with the clinic team.
At present, Carebit is used for managing ongoing care — not for booking your first appointment. To arrange an initial consultation, please use the enquiry form, email. Once your consultation is confirmed, the clinic will send you a Carebit registration link to complete your booking and set up your patient record.
You do not need to register with Carebit yourself — the clinic will send you an invitation link once your consultation has been confirmed. If you have not received a registration link, please contact the clinic directly.

All fees are confirmed before treatment begins. Written quotes are valid for 60 days. All prices include VAT.

Non-surgical treatment programmes
Chest bracing and VBT are charged at the same all-inclusive programme fee. The follow-up assessment and fitting fee (£195) is deducted from the programme cost if you proceed.

Surgical self-pay packages
All-inclusive packages cover surgeon, anaesthetist, hospital facility, follow-up and imaging. Written quote valid for 60 days provided before any commitment.
Administered and invoiced directly by the hospital. A deposit is typically required before the procedure date. Full details provided with your hospital quote.

Neither programme carries a recognised insurer procedure code and cannot be claimed against PMI. The initial consultation (£295) may be covered — patients are welcome to check with their insurer.
Surgical procedures carry recognised OPCS procedure codes, which will be provided on request for pre-authorisation. See the Insurance section above for how to obtain pre-authorisation before attending.
For chest bracing and VBT, the follow-up assessment, measurements and fitting fee (£195) is deducted from the programme cost if you proceed with the programme. The initial consultation fee (£295) is not deducted. Deductions do not apply to surgical pathways.
